Trained and prepared as a qualified fitness and health consultant within the fitness and lifestyle industry. Equipped with the skills to accurately assess and monitor health and fitness levels able to prepare safe and effective programs that meet the needs and interests of the clients. Learned a vast amount of knowledge from this program including areas of physiology, fitness assessment and exercise prescription, as well as health promotion and lifestyle counselling, nutrition, injury management, program planning, marketing, leadership, motivation and interpersonal skills.
Listed below are courses completed and skills learned with a brief description of what was covered, and knowledge attained.
Anatomy And Physiology
Learned basic structure and function of the human body. Knowledge of the theories of homeostasis and the basic structure of cells, tissues, organs, and systems.
Applied Anatomy and Physiology (for Fitness and Health Promotion)
Supplemented the Anatomy and Physiology course by applying concepts in relation to the Fitness and Health Promotion theory. Theories of homeostasis and basic structure and function of cells, tissues, organs and systems are examined. Emphasis is placed on cardiovascular, respiratory, muscular and skeletal system to prepare students for Anatomy and Physiology II.
Anatomy & Physiology II
A continuation of Anatomy and Physiology, completes the study of human organ systems including skeletal, muscular, cardiovascular, respiratory, and digestive. Instructed on the function and adaptation of body systems to exercise. Environmental factors influencing bodily systems in relation to exercise were also discussed.
Group Fitness Leadership I: Program Design
Focuses on the principles of group fitness instruction and program development including exercise intensity, flexibility techniques, exercise recovery and body composition.
Group Fitness Leadership II: Application and Practice
This course builds on the concepts learned in Group Fitness Leadership I. Information on how to plan and instruct a group exercise class was covered. Topics included class formats, music, cueing and monitoring of class participants and group dynamics.
Motor Learning and Control
The fundamental processes underlying human movement and explores how humans master skilled movements. The principles of motor performance and learning was applied to personal training scenarios, where motor skills need to be taught and coached.
Biomechanics of Functional Movement and Exercise
This course added to the Anatomy and Physiology courses by examining how the bones, muscles and joints function during exercise and every day functional movement. Emphasis was placed on the components of the musculoskeletal system and their role in creating movement in order to design safe and effective exercises.
Injury Prevention and Management
Focus on recognizing and managing injuries related to physical activity and sports. Prevention of injuries, including assessment of environmental conditions and medical conditions contributing to the incidence of injury are also discussed.
Postural Analysis
Learned postural Assessment as a guide to determine muscular or fascial imbalance and whether that imbalance contributes to a client’s pain or dysfunction. Learned detailed procedures for executing static postural assessments and dynamic postural assesments from standing posterior, lateral, and anterior views as well.
Athletic Taping
Covered rehabilitation exercises as well as prevention methods for athletes and other active people with musculoskeletal injuries and problems. Learned hoe to perfprm a wide variety of taping procedures for common athletic injuries apropriately and quickly. Some of these taping procedures include, ankle sprain (inversion/eversion), wrist sprain, shoulder spica, hip spica, lateral and medial stabilizatipon of the knee and elbow. Additional techniques learned, include elastic kinesiology taping and rigid strap taping techniques for gastrocnemius strains, achilles tendinitis, and arch problems.
Nutrition for Exercise and Sport
Examined the importance of nutrition as applied to Fitness and Health Promotion. Focus on the macro and micronutrients of carbohydrate, protein, fats, vitamins, minerals, water and electrolytes. Explored diet planning and the relationship to exercise.
Lifestyle Coaching and Behaviour Change
Introduced to health promotion and behaviour change theory. Learned the importance of ongoing and guided dialogue to assist in understanding client needs and interests. An understanding of planning and implementing behaviour change and self-improvement to clients lives.
Exercise Prescription
Learned the practical skills and theory necessary to design safe and effective exercise programs based on assessment results. Practiced exercise technique and personal training skills. Topics included principles of training, exercise monitoring, correct exercise and spotting techniques and program design for cardiorespiratory fitness, muscular strength and endurance, and flexibility. Focused on providing hands-on exercise instruction. Instructed on the proper physical execution of exercises and the proper verbal and tactile cues to use when working with clients. Learned how to analyze movements and exercises, determine what muscles are involved in a variety of exercises and create and apply a wide variety of exercise programs to meet the client's goals and needs.
Fitness Assessments
Learned assessments in the field of fitness with a focus on health screening and fitness methodologies necessary for fitness participation and prescription. Assess current fitness levels and counsel on the fitness of individuals.
Therapeutic Exercise and Restoration
An understanding of therapeutic techniques and exercises to service clients with rehabilitation and restoration needs. Learned techniques with thera bands, foam rollers, bosu balls, FMS (functional movement screening), wobble boards, ROM testing (range of motion), and postural analysis.
